Pilot breakdown draws attention to mental health standards

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

The midflight breakdown of a JetBlue pilot has sparked concerns about psychological screening for flight crews.

Capt. Clayton Osbon’s erratic behavior prompted Flight 191 from New York to Las Vegas to make an unscheduled landing in Amarillo, Texas, on Tuesday after crew and passengers intervened and subdued the 49-year-old pilot.

Osbon “yelled jumbled comments about Jesus, September 11th, Iraq, Iran, and terrorists,” according to a federal criminal complaint filed against Osbon. One passenger quoted Osbon as saying, “Pray f—— now for Jesus Christ,” the complaint said.

Mirroring a national boom, introductory archery classes have been packed as the buzz for “The Hunger Games” and its bow-toting heroine, Katniss Everdeen, has grown. This weekend, as “Hunger Games” fans spent $155 million at theaters, classes at the range were filled, mostly with girls and women hoping to channel their inner Katniss, said instructor Eva Yam.

Some ‘Hunger Games’ critics say Jennifer Lawrence was too ‘big’ to play Katniss

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

While Jennifer Lawrence’s acting performance in “The Hunger Games” was generally praised, some critics are saying she was too large to play Katniss Everdeen, a teen from a starving futuristic land, who must hunt every day to keep her family fed.

In her March 22 New York Times review, Manohla Dargis wrote, “A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss, but now, at 21, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission.”

Apple’s New iPad Faces 4G Snags Outside U.S.

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

In Australia, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company will head back to court in early May in a fight to retain the “4G” branding on the latest edition of its popular tablet computer, while Sweden’s consumer watchdog is considering whether to launch an investigation into whether the labelling is misleading.

The issue arises because the frequency bands allocated to run next-generation 4G networks differ from country to country. On its website, Apple states: “4G LTE is supported only on AT&T; and Verizon networks in the U.S. and on Bell, Rogers, and Telus networks in Canada. Data plans sold separately. See your carrier for details.”

Aggressive parents force egg hunt cancellation

Monday, March 26th, 2012

An annual Easter egg hunt attended by hundreds of children has been canceled because of misbehavior last year. Not by the kids, but by the grown-ups.

Too many parents determined to see their children get an egg jumped a rope marking the boundaries of the children-only hunt at Bancroft Park last year. The hunt was over in seconds, to the consternation of eggless tots and the rules-abiding parents.

Organizers say the hunt in Old Colorado City has gotten too big for the hundreds of children and parents now attending. They canceled this year.

NFL – Jets’ move to grab Tim Tebow looks like a gimmick

Monday, March 26th, 2012

In some ways, I feel a little sorry about what is happening to Tim Tebow.

Going to the New York Jets to be a Wildcat quarterback won’t help him develop as a quarterback. Jets owner Woody Johnson said the team traded for Tebow to acquire a winning player who could add versatility to the Jets’ offense.

Woods ends drought, turns eye to Masters

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Tiger Woods finally brought the buzz back to the very thing that made him famous – winning.

Two weeks after another injury scare, Woods looked dominant as ever Sunday in his traditional final-round red shirt to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

It was his first PGA Tour victory since a sex scandal at the end of 2009 led to one of the greatest downfalls in sports. And with the Masters only two weeks away, Woods looks more capable than ever of resuming his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus in the majors.

Supreme Court set for key health overhaul hearing

Monday, March 26th, 2012

The case has been polarizing for the United States: it would provide health insurance to some 32 million Americans lacking coverage, a major social accomplishment for some, but also would force people to buy insurance — an intrusion into civil liberties for others.

The top US court has set aside six hours for oral arguments in the case, the longest in the past 45 years. Hearings typically last only about an hour.
